Chloe is a new twisty thriller that makes you wonder about how much people can understand about you from your social media presence.

Created by Alice Seabright, the Prime Video/BBC One series follows Becky Green (Erin Doherty), “who is obsessed with stalking her childhood friend Chloe Fairbourne’s (Poppy Gilbert) perfectly curated social media presence.”

When Chloe dies, Becky assumes an identity and infiltrates her social life in order to understand what happened to her, and once she’s in– it looks like she may have bit off more than she can chew and is wrapped into way more than she bargained for.

Shadow and Act recently spoke with series stars Doherty, Brandon Micheal Hall and Pippa Bennett-Warner about the series, the impact of one’s social media presence and more.

“[Alice] has got this really brilliant ability to create three-dimensional people who are flawed and just human and recognizable,” said Bennett Warner when speaking about her character, Livia, who is one of Chloe’s friends. “I was reading a couple of other things at the time that represented black British women as being quite, I suppose suited and booted, and quite tough and quite kind of together, which is great. And I love those women…I do, they’re fab! [laughs] But then I read Chloe and I say, ‘Oh my God, there’s like this version of this slightly messier woman who’s still balancing everything but is human a bit more relaxed.’ I immediately connected with [that because] of girls like that. I went to school with girls like that. We were [also] talking about [how] representation within representation is very important. Representing a Black, British middle-class woman is as important as presented as representing somebody who is a Black woman [and] not that.”

Hall admitted that working on the series did make them think about their perspectives on social media.

“Social media is all about putting your best foot forward. No one’s out there putting their mistakes on on their pages,” he said. “Why should they? You get to curate it yourself. But I think what this project has shed light on is what we do put out and being careful about what you put out? It’s like where are you taking these people? The doomscroll of your cars and your trips? It’s addictive…it’s a drug, and look what happens in the story of Chloe when someone gets so addicted to it. They want to infiltrate an entire friend group just to figure out what happened to this one person and how they lose themselves in the process. The amount of layers that Chloe has is speaking to every conversation that we should be having right now in this generation.”
