In just a few days, two T.J. Maxx stores will permanently close. Shoppers will soon wave goodbye to T.J. Maxx stores in Boston and Maryland, The U.S. Sun reported.

By January 3, the T.J. Maxx inside Ellsworth Place mall in Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland, will close its doors after a decade. For a short time, customers in the area can enjoy 20% off sales at that location. The T.J. Maxx store in Boston will also close by Jan. 3. The Boston location is a three-story building and has been open for nearly a decade.

Why is T.J. Maxx closing its Boston and Downtown Silver Spring stores?

A TJ Maxx spokesperson shared the following statement via The U.S. Sun: “We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking. The Boston area has been the home for our headquarters for nearly 50 years and continues to be a very important market for us.”

In 2025, many popular retailers and restaurants announced closures

The upcoming closures of T.J. Maxx’s Boston and Downtown Silver Spring locations point to a larger trend of many popular retailers and restaurants losing millions in profits and subsequently closing multiple locations. This year alone, JCPenney, Kohl’s and At Home announced closures across the country.

As Blavity reported, dozens of Arby’s locations have quietly closed in recent months. Arby’s operated 3,600 locations before the closures and ranked third in the U.S. for sandwich sales in 2024. Inspire Brands, Arby’s parent company, also reported that the food chain boasted nearly $30 billion in sales in 2024. However, sales still decreased by 6.3% over the past year.

By the end of 2025, Denny’s plans to close up to 150 locations, while Red Lobster announced in 2024 that it would close over 100 stores under new CEO Damola Adamolekun. After filing for bankruptcy in late 2024, TGI Fridays began closing hundreds of its locations. At the start of 2025, there were 270 TGI Fridays restaurants. Now, fewer than 80 locations remain open.
