Reel It Back is Shadow And Act’s series when we sit down with your favorite actors and actresses as they reflect on and react to memorable scenes and roles from their storied careers. Prior guests have included Tisha Campbell, William Jackson Harper and Meagan Good.

In the latest installment of Reel It Back, actress Robin Givens sat down with S&A to give a retrospective on the highlights of her longstanding career in the film and television industry. Givens discussed her role as Jacqueline Broyer in 1992’s Boomerang and discussed her infamous trenchcoat scene with co-star Eddie Murphy.

“I actually had a terrible flu during this scene,” Givens said. “I remember my mom coming to visit me and my mother thinks liver and onions cures all illness. And I remember eating liver and onions, which I really like, and going and doing this scene.”

Givens also reflected on her time on The Women of Brewster Place and working alongside Hollywood legend Cicely Tyson.

“First of all, she’s like one of the best actresses of all times,” Givens said of Tyson. “I’ve admired her forever. She’s playing my mom. I introduce myself, but I don’t want to overstep.”

“She would take me to see the best plays, the worst plays. So she in many respects she became my mom in the business and she was the one person I could really talk to about acting.”

Givens also discussed her roles on Ambitions and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. When discussing the latter, the actress praised sitcom turned action star, Will Smith.

“I’m not the least surprised he went on to become a mega, mega movie star,” she said of Smith. “Just in terms of his work ethic and his interest in the work itself.”
