TCM continues its Race & Hollywood series… this time focusing on the range of portrayals of Arabs on screen.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, through the month of July, join hosts Robert Osborne and Professor and Middle East media consultant Jack G. Shaheen, author of Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People, and director of the documentary film based on the book, which I’ve previously highlighted on S&A as recommended viewing.

The doc explores a long line of degrading cinema images of Arabs, offering insights into the origin of these stereotypical images, their development at key points in US history, and why they matter so much today.

Watch the 50-minute Reel Bad Arabs which I embedded below, and then set your VCRs or DVRs on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the month of July, when 32 features and 5 shorts will be screened on the channel, from 1921s silent film, The Sheik, starring Rudolph Valentino, to 1999s Three Kings, which starred George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube as American soldiers in Iraq at the close of the first Gulf War.
