I actually had to google the title of the movie, because I coudn't immediately remember it.
And then it came back to me, but only in bits and pieces, so a revisit/rewatch will be necessary for me to fully recall the movie.
Although I'm sure some of you will remember the 2006 Mike Judge satire Idiocracy – a film that was fairly well reviewed (31 out of 41 critics gave it a thumbs up), but was woefully under-promoted by the studio behind it, Fox. So few actually saw it. It made $444,000 at the box office.
Idiocracy starred Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard, and Terry Crews as US President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, in a tale about two ordinary people who awaken in a dystopia where advertising, commercialism, and anti-intellectualism run rampant, resulting in a society full of plain idiots, to put it simply.
But despite its underwhelming box office, the film developed a cult following.
Skip ahead to this week, in an interview with MovieLine, Terry Crews revealed that his character may be getting his own spin-off!
President Camacho may soon be returning in a long-awaited Idiocracy spin-off. Crews, who spoke with Movieline over the weekend while promoting Expendables 2, has for years expressed a desire to revisit the Camacho character in a follow-up to no avail. Said Crews back in 2007: "You know, it was a hard go the way Fox treated him and all that. It's hard. But I would love, in any way shape or form, to play Camacho again. Believe me, that's something I'm definitely going to talk about with him again. I'm just going to badger him and badger him until I can bring Camacho back in some form."
Well, Idiocracy fans, it looks like the badgering worked. Crews said Saturday that he's had recent talks with Judge and Fox to bring President Camacho back in a new project. "Me and Mike [Judge] are talking right now with Fox about some Camacho stuff," he told Movieline. "We literally met with Fox a week ago. It’s so cool."
So this isn't a done deal folks; but you have to give him props for his resiliency. He's been pushing the project for 5 years now.
HOWEVER, we're not talking a movie/sequel here. Instead, it'll be web-based.
"We’re going to see what it becomes, but we got approval from Fox to do some stuff," he said. "We’re going to start off on the internet and do some small interstitials with Camacho. We’ll see! We’ve just got to gauge the interest and Fox wants to start slow… you’ve got to let it take off."
So there ya have it… if the fans support it, it'll start out on the web first. And if it's successful there, who knows where it'll lead.
The question I have for you folks who've seen the movie is whether this is news that gets you excited, or not.
