The 7th Annual Harlem International Film Festival, September 19-23, 2012
(New York, NY) – Kevin Iega Jeff’s legendary dance company Deeply Rooted comes to life on and off the big screen at the WORLD PREMIERE Extravaganza of MOVE, set to kick off the 7th Annual Harlem International Film Festival on Wednesday, September 19 at 7pm at the New York Public Library’s historic Schomburg Center. Theodore Collatos, the film’s director, will discuss the work and answer questions afterwards.
The film will be preceded by SOLDIER, directed by two-time Hi alum, Cinque Northern, whose work has thrilled audiences at the Festival for years. His new piece features the uniquely expressive dancer, Storyboard Basquiat who is scheduled to perform on the MTV Music Awards with Frank Ocean and will perform as part of our festivities.
At 9pm the NEW YORK PREMIERE of HERMAN’S HOUSE follows the unlikely friendship between a New York artist Jackie Summel and Herman Wallace, one of America’s longest serving solitary prisoners as they collaborate on an original and highly acclaimed art project. “A shrewd indictment of solitary confinement…a protest movie without being sententious.” – Dazed and Confused Magazine (UK)
The festival continues for four more days at the Maysles Cinema, the only independent film Art House in Upper Manhattan, founded by legendary documentary pioneer, Albert Maysles (Grey Gardens, Salesman) who recently celebrated 50 prolific years of filmmaking.

– THE WORLD PREMIERE of TRUE BROMANCE by Sebastian Doggart of Project Runway fame follows Devin Ratray (Home Alone) in his bizarre pursuit of his one true love, former secretary of state Condoleeza Rice.
– The NEW YORK PREMIERE of MAS MAN from Trinidad & Tobago documents Emmy winning Peter Minshall who was commissioned to stage the first nighttime Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Barcelona. He became the only artistic director to brainstorm three Games including Atlanta and Salt Lake City using only his love and mastery of his native art form of Carnival, or the Mas.
– BRINGING KING TO CHINA, the unforgettable story directed by Pulitzer Prize-nominated News Correspondent and War reporter, Kevin McKiernan and shot by famed cinematographer Haskell Wexler (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) about McKiernan’s daughter Caitrin’s attempt to bring a theatrical production based on Martin Luther King Jr,’s life and death and his views on nonviolent resistance to the Chinese mainland. Caitrin McKiernan will join us after the show.
