Goran Hugo Olsson’s acclaimed documentary, The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and was later acquired for distribution by Sundance Selects, now has an official theatrical release date.

We knew it was getting one, as was announced in my last post on it in June, but didn’t know when. Now we know.

The film will open in limited release in New York beginning on Friday, September 9 at the IFC Center and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, and will be followed by a gradual nationwide rollout beginning in late September.

So it just might come to a theater near you!

I’m guessing the film will be up for awards consideration once that season begins.

I’ve seen it twice already – first at Sundance, and later at the New Directors/New Films Festival here in NYC, a couple of months ago. I also reviewed it on the old S&A site. In short, I learned from and enjoyed it!

Danny Glover is one of the film’s producers by the way.
