The Color Purple film cast has leveled up with Ciara joining as adult counterpart to Nettie, meaning she’s playing the older version of Halle Bailey.
Singer Ciara has joined the upcoming musical film adaptation of The Color Purple, according to a report from Entertainment Weekly.
She will play the older version of Nettie. Halle Bailey was previously announced as the younger version of the character.
With Ciara coming on board the film, The Color Purple has become even more star-studded, with Fantasia cast as the lead character Celie. Danielle Brooks will play Sofia, and Taraji P. Henson will play Shug Avery. Colman Domingo will also star as Mister, with Corey Hawkins as Harpo.
Other cast members include Louis Gossett Jr. as Ol’ Mister, David Alan Grier as Reverend Avery and Tamela Mann as First Lady. Deon Cole will play Alfonso, Phylicia Mpasi will play Young Celie and Stephen Hill will play Buster. H.E.R. will play Squeak.
The film is directed by Blitz Bazawule, with Marcus Gardley writing the adapted screenplay and Fatima Robinson as choreographer.
This version of The Color Purple is based on the critically-acclaimed Broadway musical which also originally starred Fantasia and Brooks. Both the Broadway musical and this film adaptation are based on the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg. Both Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey are executive producers.
