Seems like it’s been awhile since our last post on The Help – quite possibly 2011’s most polarizing movie, and not just here on S&A.
The film has grossed close to $160 million in ticket sales, making it the 12th highest grossing movie of the year; let me say that again… it’s the 12th highest grossing movie of the year, in the same company as summer blockbusters like Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, and others. It’s made more money than X-Men: First Class and Super 8.
If I was asked to bet on how much box office the film would do, prior to its release, I don’t think I would have even said $100 million. I know it’s based on a best-seller, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to blockbuster-like box office numbers. I thought it would probably do well enough, but not this well.
I should note that the next highest grossing film in 2011 that had a predominantly black cast is Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, which comes in at #44, grossing just over $53 million, which is about average for TP flicks.
And after that, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son comes in at #54 with a near $38 million box office take.
So there ya have it folks… the top 3 films of 2011 with a heavy black presence in front of and/or behind the camera. And that’s all I’ll say about that 🙂

You can preorder now on Amazon.com if its on your “to own” list. Given the release date, I expect to find it in some X-mas stockings. Sales, I’m sure, will be brisk.
And I’m going to call it right now – Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer both get Oscar nominations next year. One of them might even win.
