Focus Pictures has dropped the first trailer for The Holdovers, which is from director Alexander Payne (Sideways, Downsizing).

The film stars Paul Giamatti, who is reuniting with Payne after working together on the Academy Award-winning Sideways, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and newcomer Dominic Sessa.

The Holdovers is about a curmudgeonly instructor (Giamatti) at a New England Prep School who has to remain on campus during Christmas to babysit several students that could not go home for the break. The instructor forms an unlikely bond with one of the students (Sessa), a gifted troublemaker and the school’s head cook (Randolph), who has recently lost her son in the Vietnam War.

Focus acquired the film at last year’s Toronto Film Festival market for a record-breaking $30 million.

The film is written and produced by David Hemingson, with Mark Johnson and Bill Block also producing. Executive producers include  Andrew Golov, Thom Sadra and Chris Stinson.

The film will see a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on Oct. 27, with a wider release to more states on Nov. 3rd.

On Nov. 10, The Holdovers will be released nationwide.
