The grand dame of Black Hollywood, Angela Bassett, might have more in common with us than we originally thought. Sure, she’s played some of the most iconic roles in Black cinema, including Tina Turner and Betty Shabazz, but last month’s 53 annual NAACP Image Awards proved that she slips up sometimes and embraces it. When the esteemed starlet accepted the award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role in 9-1-1, she momentarily paused when it came to reciting her son’s name in the speech. Fortunately, Bassett found the levity in it, making it all the more enjoyable. This hilarious moment is just one of many notable moments at awards shows brought to us by our favorite Black celebrities over the years. From Rick James’ infamous declaration to Mo’Nique’s high-energy performance of Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love,” awards shows have always been a good time.

1. Rick James’ infamous declaration

Rick James was iconic for many reasons, and the 2004 BET Awards only solidified that status. When appearing onstage at the annual event, he bluntly let a young woman and the rest of the audience know just who he was.

2. Mo’Nique’s impersonation of Beyoncé

The 2004 BET Awards show was clearly a night of legendary unexpected happenings. So much so that comedian Mo’Nique opened up the night with a tribute to Beyoncé’s hit song “Crazy In Love.”

3. Diana Ross’ approval of Lil Kim’s ensemble

The 1999 Video Music Awards (VMAs) may seem like it was a lifetime away, but one moment in particular will always keep that celebration relevant. When Diana Ross joined Mary J. Blige and Lil Kim on stage to present an award, the Motown songstress reached out and touched Lil Kim’s breast that was covered by a lavender pasty.

4. Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech

Who knew that just 10 years later, the VMAs would become even more sensational? This is thanks to Kanye West jolting on stage to halt Taylor Swift’s acceptance for the Best Female Video award, as he felt Beyoncé was more deserving.

5. Tiffany Haddish’s excitement to meet Meryl Streep

The 2018 Academy Awards may have had some heavy contenders for its award categories, but make no mistake, Tiffany Haddish was the night’s biggest star. Anyone who hops over a velvet rope to meet one of their idols is clearly a star to be reckoned with.

Do you remember these moments? Which one was your favorite? Here’s to hoping that we can experience more laughter from this year’s upcoming ceremonies.
