The Sex Lives of College Girls is a mega-hit for HBO Max, so much so that the network renewed it for season 2 even before its finale aired.
The show follows four college roommates “as they arrive at New England’s prestigious Essex College. A bundle of contradictions and hormones, these girls are equal parts lovable and infuriating as they live out their new, free lives on campus.”
The series stars leads Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp and Alyah Chanelle Scott with Midori Francis, Gavin Leatherwood, Chris Meyer, Ilia Isorelys Paulino, Lauren Spencer and Renika Williams also starring.
Shadow and Act recently spoke to Meyer, who plays Canaan, about the first season of the show, season 2 and much more.
‘I think me and Canaan are very much alike, just in general,” he said of similarities and differences between him and the character. “The sarcasm of him…his jokes. The only difference for real is that he went to college and I didn’t go to college. I feel like Kanan is everything that I would’ve wanted to be in college if I went to college. But also, he’s probably a lot meaner than I am [laughs]. Like the way he be f*****g with people [laughs]. I’m not like that. And we’re pretty much the same, just a college version of Chris.”
He also teased what could possibly head in season 2 and sad conversations are already beginning to take place on what’s to come.
‘I mean that’s definitely the talk that’s about to happen within the show right now,” he explained. “I really just want to be better. I want to do better than season 1. It’s great to receive the love that we’re getting and stuff like that. But from someone who’s really a part of the show happening, I can only really see it from that side. Just like everything else that I would work on in my life, I’m just going to step up with it.”
Meyer says it is something he and his co-stars have talked about as well.
“And I’ve been talking to the cast like, ‘Listen, season one was great. We did that. But like, let’s beat it,'” he said. “So that’s my goal with it. And as far as Kanan, now that the story continues, we have a chance to really create. It’s like season 1 was the introduction to these people. It’s very new. But now that there’s going to be a season 2 and so on, these are people that people at home are going to live with now.”
And as for season 2, the actor already has some ideas for where they can take the story as far as Canaan is concerned.
‘It’s all about really fleshing out that character, rounding out Canaan, who he is, what his passion is, what his drive is, why he’s there, why he wakes up in the morning. So that’s definitely what I want to see for next season and moving forward.”
Also starring in prior projects like Wayward Pines, Kicks and Netflix’s All Day and a Night, Meyer spoke to us about the trying times of the past two years, from the pandemic to social justice.
“It made a man out of me for sure,” he admitted. “It tested everything. It tested the whole journey because acting stopped, the whole industry stopped. And that’s obviously my way of living, my way of eating and my passion. So it feeds me in every single aspect, so going without, it was almost like starving. And I had to learn how to move and learn how to exist while starving. And I think it’s made me stronger now that I’m eating again. It just showed me that I’m here for a reason and my purpose is instilled and it just made me a lot more confident and just made me just stronger all-around bro, as a person.”
