UPDATE: You can relax now, if the idea wasn’t initially one that got you excited, when we first announced it last week Friday, because, as I wondered at the time, maybe it’s not going to be a daily talk show, but something more like an after show special that will air following the nights that his scripted series are broadcast on OWN – sort of like a post-broadcast recap of each show, with the actors as guests; something like what AMC does after The Walking Dead, with its Talking Dead series. It looks like that’s the case. As Tyler Perry reveals in the newly-released video embedded below, it’s a 3-week event special, and not an actual daily talk show. Read last week’s initial announcement below, and then watch the new video with Perry’s clarification after it.
Two weeks ago, I published a piece that took a look at the Tyler Perry/Oprah Winfrey partnership, over a year after it was made official (read it HERE if you missed it).
In the post, I wondered what the future of the relationship looked like, especially from Tyler’s POV, given his ambition, and the fact that, prior to the signing of the deal, he toyed with the idea of running his very own TV network, but realized the costs outweighed the benefit, and opted to find a home on Oprah’s already existing OWN network, which was experiencing some freshman struggles at the time.
With 4 series already booked for OWN (The Haves and the Have Nots, Love Thy Neighbor, For Better or Worse, and the recently-announced Single Moms Club), and an active, successful movie career, what more could Tyler Perry do?
Launch his own talk show, that’s what! A talk show that’s apparently going to air on the OWN network, making it the 5th Tyler Perry series on Oprah’s baby.
The writer/director/producer/actor shared the above photo on his Instagram page earlier this week, with the caption:
Look what I’m working on. Coming on next Tuesday after The Haves And The Have Nots, only on OWN.
A bit sudden, it seems. There was no official announcement of this prior to his Instagram post 3 days ago; unless we just missed it!
But given that he says it’s “coming on next Tuesday,” clearly it’s something that has been in the works for some time.
Although he didn’t share anything further other than the above, so this is all speculation based on an image and a caption, with no further explanation. Maybe it’s not going to be a daily talk show, but something akin to an after show special that will air following the nights that his scripted series are broadcast on OWN – sort of like a post-broadcast recap of each show, with the actors as guests; somewhat like what AMC does after The Walking Dead, with its Talking Dead series.
Or maybe it is indeed going to be a full-fledged nightly talk show, and Perry is tossing his hat into the Late Night party.
We’ll find out more next week Tuesday.
And here’s the video Perry released today providing further details on the show:
