Whoopi Goldberg is taking on Meghan Markle’s comments about her time on Deal or No Deal in her latest episode of her podcast, Archetypes.
Decider reports that in the Oct. 18 episode of her podcast, Markle talked about how she felt objectified when she worked as a briefcase model on the once-popular game show.
Markle said that she wasn't thrilled with the message the game show sent young girls.
“Before the tapings of the show, all the girls would line up and there were different stations for having your lashes put on, or your extensions put in, or the padding in your bra. We were even given spray tan vouchers each week becuase there was a very cookie cutter idea of precisely what we should look like,” she said. “I was surrounded by smart women on that stage with me. But that wasn’t the focus of why we were there. I would end up leaving with this pit in my stomach knowing that I was so much more than what was being objectified on the stage.”
"I didn't like feeling forced to be all looks and little substance," she continued, "and that's how it felt for me at the time--being reduced to this specific archetype."
Goldberg, however, said on Wednesday’s episode of The View that she “doesn’t know” if people who watched Deal or No Deal “are thinking about you like that.”
“They’re thinking, ‘I want the money,'” Goldberg said, adding that she thinks “the objectification might be coming from you and how you felt about how these women were being portrayed.”
"That's what you have to change because we're performers," the 'Till' actress continued.
“When you’re a performer, you take the gig. Sometimes you’re in a bozo suit, sometimes you got a big nose, and this is just the way it is. We’re not journalists. We’re actors. We’re trying to get to another place.”
Hostin said that she felt Markle was talking about how Deal or No Deal had “no big girls” and were all “little, skinny, tiny, pretty models.” Goldberg’s response was that that stereotype should have been expected.
"But what did you think you were going to?" Goldberg said. "That's what the show was."
Hostin agreed that Markle did take the position, but, Hostin added, “I also appreciate that she said, ‘Well, this makes me feel bad, I’m gonna walk away,’ and she walked away.”
However, Goldberg answered that maybe Markle should have kept her opinions as her opinions.
“If you see it and that’s how you feel, just maybe you don’t want to make the other women feel bad because maybe they’re trying to make a living, too.”
