In the wake of the mass shooting that occurred on the New York Subway System on Tuesday, the women of The View – Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin – were joined by guest co-hosts Julia Haart and Alyssa Farah Griffith to discuss the issues of gun violence and gun control.
“I don’t understand why we can’t solve this problem,” Behar began, as reported by Decider.
Not surprisingly, Behar was miffed at the epidemic of mass shootings plaguing this country. Guest co-host Hart echoed Behar’s views. “When you take away guns, you take away gun violence,” she said.
Griffith, a noted conservative, took the dissenting viewpoint on the panel.
“There is a growing trend of rising violent crime in cities. I’m a conservative, I stand with our police. They are that thin blue line that stops crime in our cities”
While Griffith echoed Behar and Hart’s points that there were too many guns on the street, she went on to criticize the “defund the police” movement. Hostin then chimed in.
“I think that the solve has been here for a long time, right? It’s common-sense gun legislation. And it constantly fails because Republicans have blocked that legislation across the board.” she said.
Hostin stated that Americans favor of gun legislation and also pointed out that the NYPD’s budget was $11 billion.
“It’s not about funding, it’s about gun legislation,” Hostin concluded.
Griffith went on to claim that “the top 10 cities with the high in violent crime are all led by Democrats,” to which Behar chimed in.
“So what does that got to do with Democrats, then?” asked Behar, with Hostin adding, “Because the five states with the highest per-capita murder rate…all lean Republican, all voted for Trump. And in fact, what’s interesting is this study found that murder rates in the 25 states Trump carried in 2020, 40% higher overall.”
“A lot of those cities have very strict gun laws, like New York City, and yet we have crime in the city with guns. Does that mean that people are bringing guns in from other states?”
