In 2014, The Weeknd, 32, explained to an inquisitive fan the genesis of his stage name in a Reddit thread and said that he intended to name his first mixtape The Weekend instead of House of Balloons. He also added he despised his name “at the time” and decided to adopt The Weeknd as a pseudonym, dropping the “e” because a Canadian band had already claimed and copyrighted the moniker, NME reports.
Once Twitter got ahold of this information on Sunday, they jokingly started sending the Canadian singer-songwriter ideas for other stage names.
The “Blinding Lights” singer told his followers they were funny and said he might “pull a YE” by changing his name to just Abel and drop his last name; his real name is Abel Tesfaye, according to Complex.
you guys are hilarious. i feel like i should change my stage name to ABEL at this point lol.

maybe pull a YE and just legally change my name to ABEL. no last name. Like Madonna or Cher or Prince. I don’t know it seems like a lot.

“The lines were blurry at the beginning,” he said, according to GQ. “And as my career developed—as I developed as a man—it’s become very clear that Abel is someone I go home to every night. And The Weeknd is someone I go to work as.”
