Danny Trejo seems to be quietly carving out a piece of the leading man pie for himself, even though some of these films likely won't be seen by most movie-goers (see recent films like Machete and The Bill Collector as examples; the latter released on DVD only).
I never really thought about how old he is, but it's worth noting that the man is 67 years old! Not necessarily an old man yet, but certainly not what we'd call a youngster; and dude is still a bad-ass on screen. The details in his face alone say so much, and, even though he's old enough to be my father, he's just not someone I'd want to fuck with. The fact that he won the lightweight and welterweight boxing titles while serving time at San Quentin years ago, certainly is of influence 🙂
Anyway… speaking of him being a bad-ass… When I first watched this trailer over the weekend, I actually thought it was a spoof of some kind; but it's a very real movie titled Bad Ass – a title that should tell you all you need to know.
Directed by Craig Ross, the film's synopsis reads:
A Decorated Vietnam hero Frank Vega returns home only to get shunned by society leaving him without a job or his high school sweetheart. It's not until forty years later when an incident on a commuter bus (where he protects an elderly black man from a pair of skin heads) makes him a local hero where he's suddenly celebrated once again. But his good fortune suddenly turns for the worse when his best friend Klondike is murdered and the police aren't doing anything about it.
Starring alongside Trejo are Charles S. Dutton ('member him?), Ron Perlman and others.
It's described as an action movie, with a scheduled release date of April 2012, although no word on whether it'll be in theaters or a direct-to-dvd release. I'm guessing the latter, but ya never know.
