Lisa S. Palmer is experiencing a pretty extreme case of financial stress at her former school, New York City's Hunter College. According to The New York Post, Palmer dropped out two years ago but has continued to live in her dorm room, forcing the institution to file an eviction lawsuit against the 32-year-old in Manhattan Supreme Court.
Per the suit, Palmer allegedly “racked up a staggering $94,000 in unpaid residence hall charges on account of her continued occupancy, all the while ignoring Hunter College’s service of additional vacate notices.”
For her part, Palmer argues that she isn't staying put because she loves the dorm life or because rent in New York is way too high. She says it is because the school wronged her.
“I plan on fighting the lawsuit and while I fight it, I’m going to stay,” said Palmer, who claims Hunter refused to allow her to enroll in Fall 2016 classes because she disputed her tuition and housing bill.
“I felt that it was a miscommunication initially, but after I met with the dean, I felt that they were starting to treat me unfairly. It was like, ‘Get out,’” she added.
Palmer also said she felt "very isolated" and “really lonely” living in the dorm, noting that no one else lives in her wing of the dorm besides a middle-aged nurse who Hunter is also trying to evict.
Palmer was a former geography major at the school and currently works at an architecture firm.
