Parents of a newborn are looking for answers after an Orange Park, Florida hospital gave their child to another woman, who mistakenly breastfed the baby.

Joii Brown and her husband were looking to get to know their son, Roman Phillips before their plans were interrupted.

They told local news outlet News4Jax that Orange Park Medical Center nurses took the newborn to surgery to perform a routine circumcision last Thursday, and ended up being breastfed by the stranger.

The couple was informed the operation would only take about half an hour. However, they grew worried when the baby returned an hour and a half later.

"These two nurses walked in and they said that they took my child in another girl's room and they mistakenly thought that was her child and not mine and she ended up breastfeeding him for two minutes," Brown said.

Nurses claimed they did not look at Roman's wristband leading to the mix-up and apologized, claiming the error was a "human mistake."

"I know everybody makes mistakes, but this is something I feel like is more than just a mistake because, just looking at a wristband, that’s something really minor," Brown said. "All you had to do was look at the wristband and see that isn’t her child."

Orange Park Medical Center ran tests to see if her son was sick from the breastfeeding. According to WTVR, the hospital is not releasing info about the wellbeing of the woman who breastfed Roman, citing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Doctors told her they could not detect if Roman was negatively affected by the breast milk until he was a bit older.

"My main concern is that it could have been something other than breast milk," she said. "And that [it] could happen to anybody’s child."

The medical center released a statement in support of the family stating " the hospital will do everything we can to follow the family’s wishes and support the family."

Meanwhile, WTVR reports the family will seek out legal aid and are speaking with an attorney.
