A Las Vegas mother did the most in the best way for Halloween.
Nidra Cummings knew she wanted to go all out for her son's Halloween costume.
"I knew I wanted to do a really cool costume and something that was mommy and me," she told Good Morning America. She wanted to create a look to reflect her son Nathan's personality, so she scrolled through her social media accounts for inspiration.
Cummings noticed little Nathan always had a snack. He's come a long way from complications he experienced as a newborn.
"When he was first born, he spent a month in the NICU with stomach issues. He was having trouble feeding," she explained to Insider. "But since then, he has become a grade-A, No. 1 eater, and that's kind of how we bond. He loves being in the kitchen with me, and I thought I could make him into some type of food [for Halloween]."
Cummings settled on the viral Popeyes chicken sandwich. She used actual Popeyes boxes to create a sandwich carton. She used felt fabric for the sandwich ingredients and dollar store serving pans for the bun's structure. Cummings used a unique method to achieve a realistic fried chicken look.
"I got a shirt from Target that was a light brown color, then I spray-glued the sleeves of the shirt and dunked them in Corn Flakes and shook it off," she said.
"We've been to a couple trick-or-treating events, and we did leave a trail [of cereal], but that's fine. We got raving reviews."
Cummings donned a wig and apron with a pasted logo to dress up as Popeyes spokeswoman Annie.
"It was so easy, and I always wanted to do a 'mommy and me' costume, so it worked out perfectly," she said.
She finished the costumes on Monday, the day Popeyes announced the sold-out chicken sandwich would return on November 3. When she found out the news, she posted the outfits on Instagram.
"To me, it was divine intervention that they're bringing back the sandwich," Cummings said.
She believes the costumes are more meaningful since she made them by hand instead of picking them up from a store.
"You don't have to break the bank, and I think even if [Nathan] were older, he would still enjoy this costume more than something store-bought," Cummings said. "It's more special."
