Do you know who Bernie Sanders is? If not, that’s a problem.
When it comes to progressive issues, Bernie Sanders, Senator of Vermont, has supported what was right, even if it wasn’t aligned with the popular opinion at the time.
Sanders opposed the Iraq war, while Hillary Clinton voted for it. And Sanders has supported marriage equality since 2000, even before Clinton got on the bandwagon. Wait, you didn’t know that she was once against marriage equality? Take a look at her speech against gay marriage from 2004, when serving as a senator.
Sanders is also formidably against “big money” in politics, and is and has been fully dedicated to issues that affect Americans. Just take a look at the committees that he is involved in.
Unlike Clinton, Sanders has never wavered from the forefront of progressive issues. For liberals, he could be the best presidential candidate to represent us.
But the problem is that no one who relies on mainstream media knows who the hell he is.
So could Bernie actually win against Hillary?
Possibly. Sanders does have some strong support despite the fact that he is not well-publicized. And he’s closing in on Hillary in the polls. After campaigning in New Hampshire this week, Sanders is behind Hillary by only eight points .
Also, in a survey conducted by The University of New Hampshire Survey Center, 43 percent of Democratic voters in the state would vote for Clinton while 35 percent would vote for Sanders. When asked what candidate cares most about “people like you,” 45 percent said Sanders while only 24 percent said Clinton.
However, I’ve got to say that the power of the “Clinton” name, her experience as a Senator and Secretary of State, and the prospect of finally electing a woman president makes her a triple threat. And Sanders currently doesn’t have the same name recognition as Hillary.
But we must remember that even though Clinton is receiving a lot of media attention, some of that attention is bound to be negative. And these negative aspects of Hillary could turn voters to Sanders.
So can Sanders eventually become a powerhouse contender like Clinton?
Perhaps if he gets more media coverage and money for his campaign, she will certainly have to watch out for Sanders. For he represents what Hillary Clinton kind of lacks — loyalty to the issues and to the people.
Unfortunately, even if Sanders beats Hillary for the Democratic presidential nomination, he might not be able to compete against a Republican like Jeb Bush, who appears to be the strongest contender for the party. And certain factors, such as Bernie Sanders being a self-proclaimed socialist, will turn off many Americans — both liberal and conservative — who are trained to believe that everything but capitalism is detrimental to our society. On the other hand, in the eyes of Democrats, Sanders has upheld an honest, clean record in comparison to Clinton’s, and that could carry him a long way.
