If you’ve ever been to Austin, Texas, you’ve heard their proud motto within minutes of stepping on their territory: “Keep Austin Weird.”
Well, according to HuffPo, one particular Texas-based group is making sure that Austin’s primary adjective is “weird” instead of “racist.” Grassroots organization Keep Austin Weird, Not Racist has launched a campaign to rename Robert E. Lee Road, named after the commanding general of the Confederate Army.
The grassroots group has a different “Robert” in mind, in fact: Led Zeppelin’s lead singer, Robert Plant. It actually makes more sense because Plant was once a resident of Austin.
“Robert E. Lee Road is not what represents us,” said the group via a video posted on its Facebook page. “If anything, we’re more like Robert Plant Road. Aren’t we the ‘Live Music Capital of the World,’ after all?”
The group's campaign runs on the hashtag, #RobertPlantRd in support of renaming the now Confederate-linked road.
The Keep Austin Weird, Not Racist group joins other efforts to eliminate Confederate monuments. While these groups deem the monuments as representing racism’s glorification, others – including President Donald Trump – oppose the efforts, claiming removing the monuments is “erasing history.”
Still, it looks like this group would rather Austin's history remain weird.
