In a viral video, a college student is depicted with skin that has been darkened or tanned. And the commenters argue the girl is wearing blackface. Britney Sinh posted a stitch of an original TikTok video showing the two girls dancing inside their dorm room.
In the TikTok video, Sinh edits a close-up shot of the alleged Blackface-wearing student, and then at the end of the stitched video, Sinh turns the camera to herself, showing a shocked facial expression.
Fellow TikTok users are accusing the student of wearing blackface in the comments of Sinh’s video, saying they too are shocked by how dark the student’s skin tone was — it’s giving “bad spray tan,” but the two dancing college students have made no response.
The original TikTok video, posted by @sydni.meadows, has made her account private since the incident. Meadows’ account is now private as well.
Sinh’s video had almost 200,000 views on TikTok, with users shocked by how dark the student presented herself online.
“I HAD THE SAME EXPRESSION WHEN I SAW,” one commented. “So we’re all making the same face right now, good to know,” a TikTok user wrote.
“AIN’T NO WAY,” another commented. “It’s giving Leather catchers mitt left in the sun to wither.”
“I’m scared, they’re shapeshifting out here,” another user wrote.
“Why do they think they look better like that??? Like where did they ever get that idea,” one user commented. “Literally no way she can say it’s just a tan.”
Blackface started well over 200 years ago mocking Black people for white people’s entertainment. It is when a person who is not Black person darkens their skin to appear Black. In the 19th Century, minstrel performers used to paint their faces black and perform comedy skits about black people, which were made to be racist and demeaning.
