While appearing on Shannon Sharpe’s podcast Club Shay Shay, Timbaland recounted how JAY-Z and Drake helped him through one of the hardest times in his life. Speaking more candidly about his struggles than ever before, the legendary producer shared the rappers had no idea what an impact they had on him.
In the episode, Timbaland explained his drug use started as a confidence boost to help him move past his introverted nature so he could further his career, HipHopDX reported.
“I felt like being an introvert ain’t gonna get you paid,” he recounted.
But things started to spiral out of control, and it began to impact his work negatively.
“God took my hearing away,” he said, referring to his ear for music. Timbaland explained the drugs he was using elevated his ego and completely diminished his talent.
Others noticed, too, like JAY-Z. Timbaland shared that, after a string of incoherent interviews, the 53-year-old gave him some advice and suggested he stay out of the limelight for a while. He believes his intervention and presence in his life were a godsend.
“JAY-Z is a prophet,” he said on the show. “God sent him. I ain’t never seen nobody like him. Hov actually raised me, and he don’t even know it. He raised me in the music business. He was so prolific, so wise beyond his age, that I was just amazed at just watching him. That’s why I had a different bond with Jay when it comes to my music. We was rewriting the Bible, in a way.”
The producer added Drake gave him similar advice.
“Even Drake told me,” he continued. “That’s why, I’m like, these guys are special to the world. Now, once they give you the information, it’s up to you to use it. I didn’t come out until the darkness, man, and that’s why I say it’s all love with these guys. They helped me during my darkest moment.”
According to HotNewHipHop, this isn’t the first time JAY-Z and Drake received flowers from one of their peers. Rick Ross recently shouted them out, sharing they are two of the few rappers in the industry who can write and record a song on the spot and stand by its quality.
