Awards show season always brings some awkward moments. This season, it didn’t take very long. Son of award-winning actor Tom Hanks, Chester Hanks, walked the Golden Globes’ red carpet Sunday in support of his father, who received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, reports CNN.
Something (we don’t know what) appeared to come over the 29-year-old, and he decided to start speaking patois. Along with his really bad Caribbean accent, he used some questionable hand movements, attempting to make his inflection seem more convincing. It didn’t.
Hanks thought he did such a great job speaking patois that he even posted the clip to Instagram, captioning it “BIG UP FIMI WHOL FAMILY SOON COM AT DI AWARDS NA SEEN.”
Many of his fellow white friends commented under the post, encouraging the problematic antics. His mom, actress Rita Wilson, commented on the post, “Maybe the best laugh of the night.”
The cringey moment didn’t stop there. The Empire actor posted a video on his Instagram story continuing the accent and even a selfie with Jamaican flag emojis and “bombaclaat.”
The morning after the awards show, Hanks went back on Instagram to make fun of the fact that his red carpet behavior made news headlines.
While some people laughed and encouraged Hanks, much of the internet did not condone his performance.

A few years ago, Hanks defended his use of "n***a," according to USA Today. In 2015, he posted an Instagram picture using the derogatory word in the caption. After facing backlash, he went back to the social media site to post a video, which has since been deleted, explaining why he used the slur.
“I do say the n-word in real life amongst my black friends who get me and can’t nobody tell me I can’t say what the [expletive] I feel like no disrespect to the struggle of black ppl during the civil rights movement but it’s 2015 now,” he said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Part of his argument included “free speech,” saying no one can tell him what he can or can’t say.
“We have also reached a point where the word can no longer have a negative connotation if we so choose. And who is to say only black people can use it? The way I see it, it’s a word that unifies the culture of hip hop across all races, which is actually kind of a beautiful thing,” he added.
Three years after those Instagram posts, Hanks revealed that he was on drugs during the time he posted them, reports the Daily Mail.
“Number one, I was on a lot of drugs. I wanted to be, like, down, you know what I mean? I just felt like I wasn't enough,” he said on The Red Pill podcast.
During the podcast, he told host Van Lathan that his antics would jumpstart his career. In a now-deleted Instagram post, he admitted to struggling with cocaine. Hanks did go to rehab for his addictions.
