The 75th Annual Tony Awards was a big night for many of Broadway’s biggest talents.
Sunday night, several musicals and actors earned top prizes.
The top winners included Michael R. Jackson’s A Strange Loop for Best Musical, actor Myles Frost for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical after his turn as Michael Jackson in MJ, Paradise Squareâs Joaquina Kalukango who took home Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, and veteran actress Phylicia Rashad for her turn as a struggling factory worker in Skeleton Crew, which earned her the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play.
In addition to 'A Strange Loop,' 'The Lehman Trilogy,' 'Company,' and âTake Me Outâ won the other highest honors of the night.
During this year’s Tony Awards, The Lehman Trilogy earned the prize for Best Play. Meanwhile, Company won Best Revival of a Musical, and Take Me Out nabbed the award for Best Revival of a Play.
A record number of productions from Black playwrights premiered during the season.
In past years, the Tony Awards had been historically dominated by white creators and actors. However, the 75th Annual Tony Awards was different as it elevated more diverse voices by honoring a record number of productions from Black playwrights.
âI feel like the phrase âGreat White Wayâ is becoming more of a nickname as opposed to a how-to-guide,â quipped host and West Side Story star Ariana DeBose.
âI felt unseen, I felt unheard, I felt misunderstood, and I just wanted to create a little bit of a life raft for myself as a Black gay man to try to just get through the day,â said A Strange Loop creator Michael R. Jackson, explaining the reasons he channeled his life into his art.
