Rashard Guinyard, a high school track star and straight-A student at Crowley High School, was killed in a fatal shooting during a prom after-party Sunday.
Guinyard had plans to attend Abilene Christian University on an athletic scholarship.
According to Forth Worth police, the shooting occurred Sunday morning in southwest Fort Worth, Texas, at a strip mall on Altamesa Boulevard. Roughly after midnight, Guinyard was found with at least one gunshot wound.
According to the statement, a second victim was found at the scene in critical condition with multiple shot wounds.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Fort Worth Police said, “upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim deceased on the scene. The victim had sustained at least one gunshot wound.”
“Detectives learned that there was a large gathering [at the] location, and unknown suspect(s) began firing weapons striking the victim as he and others attempted to flee the area on foot,” the statement continued.

“There are no suspects in custody at this time, and Homicide detectives have been notified,” the statement concluded.

On Tuesday, Guinyard’s mourning mother, Kimberly Howard, told Fox 4 that “This has taken part of us.”
She explained that her son was leaving the large gathering to make curfew when the shots were fired.
“He was leaving the party to make curfew… because he had a curfew,” Howard said.
The district, his teammates, and friends have shared their sentiments on just how special Guinyard is.
“Rashard was a standout scholar and student-athlete with a bright future ahead of him,” Anthony Kirchner, a spokesperson for the Crowley school district, said.
“Crisis response teams are in place to provide support to students and staff who are grieving, and we urge anyone with information about Rashard’s death to contact the Fort Worth Police Department,” Kirchner said.
The Wildcat Track and Field program tweeted that losing a super-star athlete like Guinyard is devastating.

“The Wildcat Track and Field program is devastated to learn of the passing of Rashard Guinyard,” ACU’s track and field team tweeted. “A sprints recruit from Crowley High School, Guinyard had signed with ACUTF to join our team this Fall.”
Hundreds mourned the teenager’s passing on social media.
“I don’t know where to start. He just committed, and I was ready to run my first year on my new AAU summer track team with him,” Elijah McKinney, a track teammate, said. “It just makes me upset because he was a good person, and he motivated me every time I practiced against him.”
Guinyard will be remembered as “the life of the party” and “generous.” Prayers for the Guinyard family.
