A book authored by David Axelrod, former advisor to the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, claims President Trump sought a lead role in the cleanup of the BP oil spill back in 2010. A page from Axelrod's book was tweeted out by McClatchy’s national political correspondent David Catanese.
Trump called @davidaxelrod during ‘10 BP oil spill to offer to lead the clean-up: “Put me in charge of this thing.”
When Axe demurred, he instead pitched him on building “beautiful ballrooms”: “I see you have these state dinners on the lawn there in these shitty little tents” pic.twitter.com/eQZvr222r8

Trump allegedly questioned the leadership of those who oversaw the cleanup and assured Axelrod of his personal expertise.
"‘That admiral you have down there running this leak operation seems like a nice guy, but he doesn’t know what he’s doing," Trump is described by Axelrod of saying. "I know how to run big projects. Put me in charge of this thing and I’ll get that leak shut down and the damage repaired.”
Axelrod claims in the book to have ignored Trump's supposed advances in regards to BP but says Trump remained persistent and offered his help for other work within the Obama administration.
"I’ve got another thing for you. I build ballrooms, beautiful ballrooms. You can go to Tampa and check one of them out for yourself," Axelrod claimed Trump said in his pitch. "I see you have these state dinners on the lawn there in these shitty little tents. Let me build you a ballroom you can assemble and take apart. Trust me. It’ll look great.”
Before his political ambitions took flight, Trump was a businessman and real estate celebrity, whose company managed non-Trump properties for a cost, according to Forbes. The report goes on to state at the time Trump sought to work with the Obama administration, Trump was facing a financial struggle, seeking protection from creditors in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
