President Donald Trump lashed out against a bail reform law in New York state which, beginning January 1, will eliminate cash bail for many misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenses.

According to CBS2, once the cash bail system is overhauled, some defendants could be given rewards to get them to show up to court.

"So sad to see what is happening in New York where Governor Cuomo [and] Mayor de Blasio are letting out 900 criminals, some hardened [and] bad, onto the sidewalks of our rapidly declining — because of them — city," Trump tweeted Tuesday. "The radical left Dems are killing our cities. NYPD Commissioner is resigning!"

Trump was almost immediately rebutted by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in a quoted tweet. The mayor defended his city, describing it as being "safer than ever."

"Our commissioner worked tirelessly to bring police and communities together," de Blasio tweeted. "We’re safer than ever because we let safety and fairness walk hand in hand — and rejected the rhetoric of crooks like you."

Proponents for the legislation, from groups like the Legal Aid Society, called for more compassion for the individuals affected and said they hoped humanity would not be impacted by their bank account.

“We’re talking about people who’ve been presumed innocent. We are talking about people who there’s no public safety risk or assessment or threat,” said Marie Ndiaye, a member of the Legal Aid Society. “At the end of the day, it comes down to how much money does this person have in their wallet.”

The inmate releases are slated to begin at some point in mid-December according to a report by CBS2.
