Production began this past September on a yet-to-be-titled TV Series based on the life – since infancy – of late Cuban salsa icon and superstar Celia Cruz. The series, a Fox Telecolombia Network production, is directed by Victor Mallarino and Liliana Bocanegra and scripted by Andrés Salgado. Puertorican actress Jeimy Osorio will star as the legendary Cruz in the TV series, which will comprise of 1-hour episodes, of 80 total, broadcasted via Colombia’s RCN network. Osorio is best known for her work in "Maid in Manhattan", "Fast Five", and the telenovelas "Santa Diabla" (Holy Devil) and "Porque el amor manda" (Because love rules).
Puertorican actor Modesto Lacén will portray Cruz’ husband, Pedro Knight. Lacén ("Animal") has portrayed Knight before in the off-Broadway theater production titled "The life and music of Celia Cruz", which ran for 20 months in New York. Laven has also acted in over 20 films in Puerto Rico and in the U.S.
Carolina Gaitán, Judy Henríquez, Aida Bossa, Abel Rodríguez, Jonathan Islas, Agmeth Scaf, Indira Serrano, Margoth Velázquez and Moisés Angulo round out the cast.
Known as the "Queen of Salsa", Celia Cruz was born in Havana, Cuba in 1925. Throughout her prolific career, she recorded over 50 albums, won 7 Grammy awards and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Cruz’ celebrated hits include "La negra tiene tumbao" (The black woman has rhythm), "Que le den candela" (Bring the heat) and "Quimbara".
Celia Cruz passed away at the age of 77 in 2003.
We’re definitely intrigued to learn more about this project, which I hope will be available in the states after its TV premiere. Will keep you posted.
