Bill Cosby recently broke his silence regarding the myriad of rape allegations against him and his upcoming trial. Without hesitation, I clicked the Twitter trend to see just what exactly was going down. I lasted maybe 3 minutes before realizing I might have to avoid social media during the Cosby trial for the sake of my sanity.

Social media commentary on topics like Bill Cosby is…never easy. But if you think you'll be joining in on the inevitable Twitter trends, here are some things to avoid:

  • Blame towards black women
  • Tweets that ask black women to "choose" between their blackness and their gender identity
  • Generalized negative statements against women of other ethnicities (ex. That’s why you should never trust a [insert race] woman!)
  • Use of the cultural value of a TV show to downplay accountability
  • Unfounded conspiracy theories
  • Selective belief in the justice system to prove a point
  • Reinforcement of patriarchal ideals and rape culture

There will be more than enough think pieces on Bill Cosby. There will be more than enough opportunities to dialogue. But before you hit "post", pause and make sure you're not about to be that Twitter troll.
