Kentucky authorities confirm the shooting death of U.S. Olympian Tyson Gay’s daughter, Trinity. Lexington police confirm the 15-year-old student was shot in the neck early Sunday around 4 a.m. at a Cook Out restaurant. Investigators say a group of men from two cars began shooting at each other in the parking lot, striking Trinity. Police confirm she was not in either car.

The men connnected to the shooting fled the scene. Trinity later died at a nearby hospital. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Police arrested 21-year-old Dvonta Middlebrooks later in the day, charging him with wanton endangerment and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Chazarae Taylor, 38 and his son D’Markeo Taylor, 19 were also arrested in connection to the shooting. All three men will be arraigned on Monday.

Following in her dad’s footsteps, Trinity was an up and coming high school track star at Lafayette High in Lexington. Gay, a former world 100-meter and 200-meter champion, told WLEX that he had a close relationship with his daughter.

“She didn’t make it. I’m so confused,” Gay told WLEX Sports Director Alan Cutler. “She was just here last week for fall break. It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened.”

Superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools Emmanuel Caulk released a statement regarding Trinity’s death.

“Our hearts are broken this morning over the loss of Trinity to this tragic and senseless act of violence. Please join us in keeping the Gay family close in thought and prayer and supporting the students, staff, and families at Lafayette High during this unspeakably difficult time.”

The school is holding a vigil Monday night in Trinity’s honor.

When news of her death circulated on social media, several individuals and athletic teams sent their condolences to the Gay family.
