Right now, millennials and Generation Z are obsessing over everything throwback. Then again, this isn’t really a new concept because every generation adopts and tweaks trends of the past for themselves. I mean, everything we are wearing now is gonna be considered classic in a decade.

Think about it: it took 10 years for us to realize that the 2000s were iconic. Not too long ago, we dismissed it as an era of generic music and oversized clothes. If you were there, you simply didn’t foresee this coming, and if you weren’t there, then you’re discovering something new. So really, the joke’s on us, but I digress (don’t want to get too much into human psychology over here).

The looks of R&B stars from yesteryear are constantly praised on social media. Yet, we see the same faces being worshipped over and over. You already know who I’m referring to: Aaliyah, Sade, Kelis, Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey—ya know, same old same old. Lawd knows I love these gorgeous and talented women, but there are more where they came from. Actually, there’s plenty more, but unfortunately many of them aren’t as popular in current times as they used to be. Their looks still live on though!

Here are five underrated R&B fashion icons that were killing it back in the day.

1. Faith Evans

Michael Daks

Those who aren’t familiar with her music simply associate her with Biggie Smalls, but she’s more than that. Faith has pipes and a very glamorous, yet very urban style, that is so timeless. Who could forget her signature blonde, and then, red hair?

2. Toni Braxton

We Heart It

Oh my god, I love this woman. Did you know that when she first hit the scene as a solo artist, she was an instant hit? Toni’s look was very simple, yet so sultry and sexy. She seriously defined class act in every aspect.

3. Mya

Patentler

Before curly hair was a huge movement in the "aughts," Mya let her big bouncy curls run free to go with her girly and coquettish looks, that consisted mainly of dresses and crop tops with jeans. Her petite little nose ring was icing on the cake.

4. SWV

RCA

These ladies were so adorable, and their music is sampled like a b*tch these days. Straight from the Bronx, New York, they dressed very tomboy or very conservative, but their hair and nails though…slayed to the gawds! The lead singer, Coko, was especially known for her crazy long acrylics.

5. Blaque

Teen People

The brain children of Left Eye from TLC, Blaque dressed like chicks from a futuristic film with outfits like white latex suits, with high ponytails and bubblegum fur jackets. Sounds a lot like something we’d see on Instagram and Tumblr today, don't you think?
