I had no idea that a documentary on Mavis Staples was in the works. That’s one aspect of the business I’m in that I love – learning about new projects that weren’t at all in my purview.
The film is directed by Jessica Edwards, and, per the SXSW press release, its synopsis reads: "Her family group, the Staple Singers, inspired millions and helped propel the civil rights movement with their music. After 60 years of performing, legendary singer Mavis Staples’ message of love and equality is needed now more than ever."
Celebrating its 22nd year, the SXSW Film Conference and Festival will take place March 13 – 21, 2015 in Austin, Texas.
