Here’s the just-released first full trailer for the upcoming big screen adaptation of the immensely popular video game "Warcraft," created and published by video game company Activision Blizzard.
The fantasy epic movie, which will take place in a variety of locations established in the massive video game series, "portrays the origin story of the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs, with an emphasis on both the Alliance’s and the Horde’s sides of their conflict."
The movie is being directed by Duncan Jones ("Source Code," "Moon"), who co-wrote the screenplay with Charles Leavitt.
It’s not a game I’m familiar with, but I’m sure those of you who are, must be giddy about the film that’s coming, which the producers promise will be R-rated, violent, and not something for the whole family.
The characters are divided into 2 warring tribes (well known to "Warcraft" gamers) – the Alliance (whose races include humans, dwarves, night elves, gnomes), and the Horde (orcs, trolls, blood elves).
Of note, Paula Patton and Ruth Negga will be fighting on the side of the Alliance – the good guys, I guess. Patton plays Garona, who the press release says is caught between the Alliance and the Horde, and is a strong-willed survivor who must decide where her true loyalty lies. And Negga is Lady Taria, the royal Queen of Stormwind, King Llane’s great love and most trusted counsel. King Llane will be played by Dominic Cooper. He’s the leader of the Alliance city of Stormwind and a beacon of hope to its people in a time of darkness.
Also on the side of the Alliance are: Anduin Lothar (played by Travis Fimmel). He’s the lead protagonist for the Alliance – a war hero who has sacrificed everything to keep the people of Azeroth safe; and then there’s Medivh (Ben Foster), who’s known as "the Guardian;" he’s a mysterious and reclusive protector who wields formidable power. And finally, Khadgar (Ben Schnetzer) – a gifted young mage, embarking on a daring search for the truth.
And on the side of the Horde:
– Durotan (Toby Kebbel): The lead protagonist for the Horde, Durotan is the noble Chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan, battling to save his people and his family from extinction.
– Orgrim (Rob Kazinsky): Orgrim is Durotan’s right hand and a brave warrior destined to wield the Doomhammer: a weapon of orc legend.
– Blackhand (Clancy Brown): Known as “The Destroyer,” Blackhand is one of orc-kind’s most fearsome and titanic warchiefs.
– Gul’dan (Daniel Wu): Gul’dan is a supreme orc ruler, fueled by a dark magic that even he cannot control.
Legendary also announced an online promotion in which fans can choose their allegiance and sign up for movie updates from the perspective of their chosen tribe at fightforthealliance.com or fightforthehorde.com.
"Warcraft" the movie, is due out in 3-D (of course) on June 10, 2016.
