“When we meet Gamora (Zoe Saldana), she’s a bad guy working with Ronan and Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Korath (Djimon Hounsou), and by extension for Thanos. Gamora doesn’t necessarily like doing that anymore, and tries to find a new path for herself. But she has such a reputation as the deadliest woman in the galaxy that people aren’t greeting her with open arms.”
Words from Marvel chief Kevin Feige in an interview with Empire Magazine.
I assume this registers with those of you who’ve read the comic. But those who haven’t, and I’m betting that means the vast majority of you (including myself), now you know a little more about the character than you did before.
Zoe Saldana plays the female lead in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy big screen adaptation – a character named Gamora, described as “the green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. She also happens to be a skilled assassin,” and according to Marvel Chief Kevin Feige above, she’s the deadliest woman in the galaxy, who makes a switch for the better, from working for the bad guys, to joining the good guys – the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The character sounds like a combination of Neytiri (the character she played in Avatar) and Cataleya, the character she played in Colombiana.
Also of note, Djimon Hounsou is playing a villain named Korath the Pursuer – according to the Marvel wiki, a member of the alien Kree race, who was augmented by an unknown experimental cyber-genetic engineering process. He has superhuman strength, stamina, and durability. He also has the ability to psionically locate individuals by tracing their brain patterns. He wields two 1½ foot beta-batons which generate electrical force capable of stunning opponents into unconsciousness on contact or disrupting functions of electrical devices. He is capable of flight via electrically powered turbines in his boots.
Saldana and Hounsou join Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, in the movie adaptation of the superhero movie franchise (potentially).
Also, Bradley Cooper will voice the Rocket Raccoon character, described as a sometimes over-enthusiastic weapons expert; and Vin Diesel is Groot, the giant tree-like creature.
James Gunn is directing the movie, with Disney releasing it on August 1, 2014.
Marvel released the first full trailer for the film last night, during Jimmy Kimmel’s show, which is embedded below:
