Well it almost carried the entire month. After a three
week run as the No.1 film, Captain
America: The Winter Solider finally was forced to give up its position for
the “female revenge” comedy The Other Woman.
The film, which has gotten some of the worst reviews for
any film so far this year, was No. 1 this weekend, earning $24.7 million, compared to Captain America, which came in second with
$16 million.
No doubt, the fact that
there are no other films currently out there, particularly aimed towards women, helped it to be No. 1, despite the awful reviews.
Or maybe it was all Nicki Minaj fans who came out in force to support their girl. Who
knows? Any ideas? And besides, it’s a moot point anyway, since, when The Amazing Spider Man 2 opens Friday, it’s going to blast everything out of the water.
Meanwhile, Transcendence,
as expected, continued its box office slide dropping some 62% with $4.1 million.
Even with eventual overseas numbers added in, the film is going to fall way
short of the $200 million gross it’s going to need just to break even.
However A Haunted
House 2 dropped even more, some 63%,
indicating terrible word or mouth, with under $3.3 million this weekend.
Brick Mansions, the American remake of the French film District 13, with the late Paul Walker and RZA, pulled in a ho-hum $9
million. And finally, currently at $48
million, and still making money, The
Grand Hotel Budapest has become director Wes Anderson’s biggest grossing film domestically.
