The opening night of the London Olympics took a huge bite out of the box office on Friday, especially on The Dark Knight Rises.
The opening night of the Games got the highest ratings ever for NBC for an opening night ceremony, for a non-U.S. Olympics, even better than the spectacular Beijing 2008 opening ceremony. However, on Saturday, the box office recovered somewhat, despite still impressive ratings for the Saturday games.
If this continues, the London Games will be the most watched non-U.S. Olympics ever for the network, which will have an effect on the box office for the next two weeks.
But don't cry for DKR yet. It was still No.1 this weekend, and has already made close to half a billion dollars worldwide to date, with a lot more to come. However one box office tracking group says that they estimate that some 20-25% of the film-going audience for the film is still holding back to see it, because of the Colorado shootings.
The Watch, which couldn't have come out at a worse time, didn't fare so well, and one Fox exec was quoted as saying that the Treyvon Martin shooting may have been a factor on the lackluster box office performance, despite the studio's attempts to disconnect the film from the real tragic events.
As for Beasts of the Southern Wild, it moved up on the b.o. chart to no. 13, increasing the number of screens it's playing on now to 208 screens, and grossing just short of $4.2 million to date.
