Of course, as excepted G.I. Joe: Retaliation was No.1 this weekend, though not as big as some analysts expected. And The Croods, not surprisingly, after a strong
opening last week, held on to the No. 2 slot.

The Host (not to be confused with the terrific 2006 Korean sci-fi monster film of the same name), which is based on an early book by Stephanie Meyer
who wrote the Twilight novels, opened surprisingly weak, considering that the
belief that the whole Twilight/Meyer
connection was going to pull people in.

And Spring Breakers (AKA Former Disney Channel Girls Go Naked and Wild on a Crime Spree) continues to be the surprise B.O. indie film hit so far this year, well outperforming expectations.

But of course, what we really want to know is how Tyler
Perry’s Temptation did this weekend. It came in third with $22.3 million which is pretty much average for a weekend
opening tally for his films, all things considered.

He’s had films that have opened bigger. For
example, Madea Goes to Jail still holds the all-time biggest opening ever for a Tyler Perry movie, with
$41 million, Madea’s Family Reunion opened with over $30 million, and Why Did I
Get Married Too opened with $29 million, to name a few.

But he also has had several films that opened much lower.
Daddy’s Little Girls still has the lowest weekend opening with $11.2 million, and last year’s Good Deeds opened with $15.6 million.

So the opening take for Temptation is right around his
usual $21-22 million average. The question is, though, what will happen next weekend?

Typically his films tend to drop off big because, 1) most
of the people who want to see his films go out to see it the first weekend, and
2) negative word of mouth.

And the word of mouth for Temptation, at least from people
that I know who have seen it, is that it isn’t good at all. And from what I understand, it’s dull and there’s a big plot twist (NO SPOILERS and you shouldn’t spoil it
either in the comments section) which not only sounds, to me, rather pretty cruel, but so far, has been
met with derision. So that could also possibly turn people off.

And by the way, that reminds me, what happened to all
those black women who were upset last year, who said that they were going to boycott the film because he cast Kimmy Kakes in the film, instead of a black actress?
So angry in fact that Perry had to issue a public statement on why he cast her
in the film saying that: “Millions
of young people adore her and are following her every move (and) because I
believe that my films speak from the inside out, why wouldn’t (she) be invited into a film about Faith,
Forgiveness and the healing power of God? What is wrong with that?”

I guess that was good enough for a lot of those people who
were mad at him.
