The online viral campaign for Spike Lee’s Oldboy picks up with a frantic new video clip, and postcards, all advertising “Hotel Oldboy” – essentially, where the film’s lead (played by Josh Brolin) is held in captivity for 20 years without explanation.
Spike Lee’s much-anticipated adaptation, which also stars Sharlto Copley, Elizabeth Olsen, and Samuel L. Jackson, will open on November 27 – Thanksgiving weekend – courtesy of FilmDistrict.
Spike Lee directed the film from a script penned by Mark Protosevich, who is also co-producing, along with Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane of Good Universe.
I actually expected the film to premiere at some international film festival before it’s released commercially, like Toronto or Venice, to create some early buzz and build anticipation, and then it opens in USA theaters a month-and-a-half later. But with both TIFF and Venice already done for the year, the only other high-profile festivals left are the New York Film Festival and possibly AFI. Although the NYFF (which starts on the 27th) has already unveiled its main slate; however, a last minute addition certainly isn’t out of the question.
We’ll see.
