Remember Bronx middle school teacher Patricia Cummings, who told her black students to lie on their backs as she stepped on them so they could "feel" what slavery was like?
Well, according to NY Daily News, she's facing termination for that lesson. Now she's filing what could become a $1 billion lawsuit against the New York City Board of Education, citing reverse racism.
Cummings denies ever making physical contact with the children, and claims she didn't tell them to lie on their backs either.
“It’s a scandal,” said her attorney, Tom Liotti. “There is blatant racism and reverse discrimination in the public schools of New York City. This is why white parents do not want to send their children there.”
Cummings' legal team expects the lawsuit to become a class action suit.
According to The Hill, the Department of Education gave Cummings a discontinuance notice earlier this month, which said she'd be fired in 30 days due to her poor judgement within the classroom.
“We’ve begun the process of firing Ms. Cummings based on an investigation of this unacceptable behavior and her performance as an educator,” said DOE spokesperson Doug Cohen in response to the lawsuit announcement. “We’ll review this baseless lawsuit.”
Cummings' notice of claim states she is owed $120 million in damages, and Liotti urges the DOE to acknowledge the alleged reverse racism issue.
“It’s no longer the blacks and minorities who are being discriminated against,” noted Liotti. “It is discrimination against white teachers who are making great sacrifices to be there.”
