Who created trap music?

This question has recently sparked lively debate between music enthusiasts and musicians alike, with rappers T.I. and Gucci Mane being most vocal and claiming the music genre’s origins.

T.I. publicly debated on Twitter that he was the originally creator of trap music, citing his album Trap Muzik and saying: “OK, so… AGAIN for the slow ones in the back… August 19th, 2003. Birth of Trap Muzik & Only fools dispute facts!!”

However, Gucci Mane disputed this claim with an Instagram post. Gucci Mane dropped a Flashback Friday photo from when he released his 2005 album “Trap House,” writing in the caption: “#FBF The Day I Invented Trap Music #Guwop aka #TheEvilGenius #1017Ceo.”

Some believe the corresponding album release dates, and them being two distinct years apart, easily separates the copy from the blueprint, but others have reasoned that neither rapper started trap music. They instead developed the idea together as it evolved.

According to UpRoxx, rapper 2 Chainz explained that, “[Trap] wasn’t a music. It was a lifestyle. It was an area, it was an environment where you stayed at.” Therefore, as the two rappers came into contact with this lifestyle and experienced its realities, trap music would inevitably breed from them both.

However, this is just one opinion.

Some fans are sticking hard by T.I’s side:

Sorry Fellas, T.I. invented Trap Muzik! Gucci came out in 2006. T.I. was 3 years earlier. He was the visionary. Give him credit!— D. Harris (@BIGDZ327) April 10, 2018
