Will Smith shocked the world on Sunday night when he slapped Chris Rock on the Oscars stage, shortly after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. The moment not only fueled a night of jokes on social media, but also caused a heated debate as people argued about who was wrong in the situation.

Will’s supporters said the actor was justified when he walked up to the stage and smacked Rock, who made a reference to Jada’s struggle with alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that leads to hair loss.

“Jada I love you, G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” the comedian said to Will’s longtime wife while presenting the Academy Award for best documentary.

Some social media users said Rock deserved to be slapped after comparing Jada to the fictional character who has a shaved head.

Some said the comedian deserved more than a slap.

After striking Rock, Smith went back to his seat and yelled at the comedian, saying  “leave my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth.” The Hollywood star later took the stage to accept the Oscar for best actor for his role in King Richard, CNN reports. Smith played Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in the movie.
