Speaking with BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles, while doing press for the upcoming Men In Black III in a week, Will Smith made a few declarations that I thought were worth sharing – the throughline being that he doesn't want to become, as he said, "the sequel guy," referring of course to all the sequels of films he's done in the past, like Hancock, Bad Boys, I Am Legend, and of course Men In Black.

First, on the 3rd film in the Men In Black franchise, and whether we can expected a fourth: "We were very reticent about going to a [Men In Black] part III because sometimes it looks like you're making a sequel for the sake of making a sequel."

Although as the BBC blog notes, he said he would consider making MIB 4… "if people love this one" – MIB3.

So essentially, he's not-so averse to becoming the sequel guy. If MIB3 does well (both critically and commercially I assume) then MIB4 isn't entirely out of the question.

On all the talk about a 3rd Bad Boys movie he said that he'd "potentially consider" it, adding that there has been a "groundswell" of support for it – I guess from fans primarily.

And lastly, about a sequel to I Am Legend his response was similar, saying that while producers are indeed working on a I Am Legend sequel, when asked whether he would be involved in it, Smith said "Probably not."

But then he added: "Producers are working on it. I'm not actually working on it. If it's great, I'm into it."

He ends by saying, "I don't want to be the sequel guy. I figure I've got about six or seven more years," something he said in a previous interview we shared about a week ago (the part about having 6 or 7 more years "where I can run and jump a little bit and then I'm going butt and gut for the rest of my career. Butt and gut," as he told I Am Rogue).

So it's like he's talking out of both sides of his mouth; he's not keen on any of these sequels it seems, BUT, if a number of favored things meet (specifically, support for any of them from fans especially, and I'll assume studios, and if he likes the material – essentially the script), he'd consider any or all of them.

Is that what you folks are getting from all this as well?

He'd like to move on to maybe more original, and even mature works, but he doesn't want to close the door entirely on these potential large payoffs.
