Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am believes he was racially profiled by a flight attendant on an Australian airline.

The Grammy-winning artist went to Twitter Friday and explained the incident, saying he was on a flight from Brisbane to Sydney when the attendant sent the police after him because he couldn’t hear her instructions while wearing his headphones.

"I’m sorry? Is callin the police on a passenger for not hearing [t]he P.A due to wearing noise canceling headphones appropriate?" he tweeted. "If I didn’t put away my laptop 'in a rapid 2min time' I’d understand. I did comply quickly and politely, only to be greeted by police. I think I was targeted."

The rapper and producer added that the attendant was targeting people of color. 

"I’m sorry to say me and my group have experienced the worse service due to a overly aggressive flight attendant," he tweeted. "I don’t want to believe she racist. But she has clearly aimed all her frustrations only at the people of colour."

The singer said he was met by five police offers after he landed, although he followed the attendant's instructions. 

"I was intimidated by five police officers when I landed…for what?" he tweeted. "I put away my laptop when she asked. Why would she feel threatened by me to call the police? What did I do wrong? I wasn’t out of hand. I was polite and did what she asked. Now you’re asking me to take abuse?"

According to Al Jazeera, Australian airline Qantas denied that anything racist happened on the flight.

"There was a misunderstanding on board, which seems to have been exacerbated by will.i.am wearing noise-cancelling headphones and not being able to hear instructions from crew," a spokesman for the airline said, according to Al Jazeera.

In the tweets, the artist identified the flight attendant by name.

"@Qantas Your #RacistFlightattendant was beyond rude & took it to the next level by calling the police on me," he said. "Thank god the other passengers testified that SHE was out of control. The police finally let me go. Imagine if the police were as aggressive as Lorraine Marshall."

Some social media users criticized the star for naming the flight attendant.

"Disgusting that you've publicly named her," one person said on Twitter. "I hear a lawsuit coming."

"Why do you need to play this out so publicly? Even naming the flight attendant. It’s just an exercise in intimidation and ego on your part," tweeted Peter Ford, an entertainment reporter in Australia. "You seriously think she was out looking to annoy people of colour? Grow up."

Still, others came to defend the artist.

"Why shouldn’t he name her?" one Twitter user said. "You can bet your life she would have named him!"

According to CNN, the airline is willing to support legal action against the rapper.

"Absent a retraction, and if the crew member wanted to take the matter further, we'd certainly be willing to provide legal support for them to do this," an airline spokesperson said.

Responding to a Twitter user who believes the singer was using the headphones as an excuse, will.i.am said people need to be aware that noise-canceling headphones are now common.

"We live in 2019 and technology is advancing. They have WiFi in certain planes and noise canceling is becoming a standard," he said. "People who serve the paying public need to know that passengers have on devices that block out outside sound. Sending the police after them is a bit much."

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, the producer said he travels often and doesn't give employees any problems.

"I'm the coolest traveler," he said. "I don't ask for much. I try to stay out of their way." 

According to Yahoo, police said they spoke to crew and passengers at the airport and decided not to take any further action on the alleged incident.

"The Australian Federal Police considers this matter finalised," police said in a statement.

The Black Eyed Peas are currently on tour in Australia, CNN reported.
