Mysoginoir, mentioned in a previous Blavity article, is a concept grounded in intersectionality, which analyzes how various social identities such as race, gender, class, and sexual orientation interrelate in systems of oppression. It specifically speaks to anti-black misogyny. Recent notable events show that when America talks about feminism, black women are often left out of the conversation. Blogger, AkilahObviously on Twitter, and Smoothie Freak on YouTube recently posted a hilarious video that helps to explain the phenomenon in much simpler terms. She provides an analogy for the intersectionality in feminism using various forms of pizza as an example.
First she explains that most everything in the world is made to serve burgers (men), then explains that feminism in general supports equal rights between burgers and pizza (women). While that’s all and well, cheese pizza (white women) is by far the most celebrated type of pizza. There’s no mention of deluxe pizza (black women, LGBTQ or other qualifiers) in that initial conversation. Deluxe comes with various toppings and can be highly celebrated or hated for those very features. Deluxe pizzas are thus less likely to be represented in all situations. Toppings aside, the point is that, feminism itself is not all-inclusive. We cannot make assumptions. Just writing this makes me want a juicy, cheesy, stuffed-crust pizza with pepperonis, green peppers and olives. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments below.
