Reps. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., tweeted and then deleted their messages of solidarity with Will Smith after the actor struck comedian Chris Rock for joking about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head, Insider reports.

“#Alopecia nation stand up! Thank you #WillSmith. Shout out to all the men who defend their wives living with alopecia in the face of daily ignorance & insults,” the Massachusetts lawmaker wrote in a tweet with a picture of Pressley and her husband, according to NBC News.

She continued, saying, “Women with baldies are for real men only…boys need not apply.”

In 2020, Pressley shared her struggles with alopecia areata, a medical condition that causes a person to lose their hair, according to NPR.

In a now-deleted tweet, Rep. Jamaal Bowman also tweeted in defense of Smith.

“Teachable Moment: Don’t joke about a Black Woman’s hair,” Bowman wrote, Insider reports.

Jada Pinkett Smith opened up about her alopecia diagnosis on social media in 2018, NBC News reports.

Rep. Ritchie Torres spoke out against Will’s reaction to Rock’s joke and condemned his behavior at the award show.

“I found Chris Rock’s joke to be distasteful and disgusting. But there is no justification for a violent assault on live TV. None,” Torres said in a tweet, according to the Insider.

On Monday, Rep. Ayanna Pressley posted on Twitter to clarify her previous tweets. She said that she does not condone violence, referencing Smith’s actions at the ceremony.

She continued in another post about how difficult it is to live with alopecia.

Pressley then concluded that women’s bodies are not “public domain,” especially when they are not in control of how they change. She reiterated that she does not condone violence, but she is still team Jada and is a proud “Alopecian.”
