Ahead of International Women's Day, Mattel introduced a new "Hidden Figures" Barbie doll inspired by Katherine Johnson in an announcement on Tuesday. The new Barbie is part of the company's "Barbie Inspiring Women's Series" line of dolls.

The Barbie inspired by Johnson is dressed in a pink dress with black-rimmed glasses and a lanyard with a NASA ID card around its neck. Mattel hopes the dolls in the series will serve as an inspiration to girls.

"As a brand that inspires the limitless potential in girls, Barbie will be honoring its largest line up of role models timed to International Women’s Day because we know that you can’t be what you can’t see,” Lisa McKnight, senior vice president of Barbie said in a press release. “Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real life role models to remind them that they can be anything.”

Johnson is a former NASA mathematician and physicist pioneer who broke racial and gender barriers when she was hired as a "human computer" in the 1950s. She was notably called upon to recheck the calculations made by electronic computers for John Glenn's mission when he became the first American to orbit Earth.

The 2016 film adaptation of "Hidden Figures" highlighted the incredible stories of trailblazers Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan.
