A police officer shot a groundhog Monday morning (May 7) for blocking traffic, WBAL-TV reported.

Earlier this week, video emerged on Facebook of a Carroll County deputy attempting to guide a groundhog off the road. The groundhog walked toward the officer, and the officer shot it.

Hmm, sound familiar?

"He realized that it was not responding as expected for an animal that was not being cornered or trapped. Believing the groundhog to be either sick or injured, the deputy then put the animal down for the public’s safety," read a statement from the sheriff's office.

Several residents contacted the news organization out of concern for the groundhog and expressed displeasure at how the cop handled the situation.

"It's unusual behavior. It's unusual behavior," noted Karen Baker, executive director of the Carroll County Humane Society, who noted that it is mating season.

"Under normal circumstances, an animal will take its easiest route of escape when it's threatened or frightened," Baker continued, noting that the animal may have been ill. "Normally, an animal will run from humans, especially if you're making yourself large, you're stomping your feet, you're loud."

The Humane Society collected the groundhog and confirmed it will not be testing the animal since it didn't have any known direct contact with humans or domestic animals.

Among other things, the black community has had to deal with the stresses that come behind fighting for our lives in a society that values the lives of animals before ours.

We'll just be sitting here waiting for the #AllLivesMatter crew to barrage social media with #GroundhogLivesMatter while there continues to be *crickets* about black lives.
