Like clockwork… Following serial adaptations of movies like “Minority Report,” "Rush Hour," “Limitless,” and others I can’t recall at the moment, Fox has given a pilot commitment to a  “Lethal Weapon” TV adaptation, which will be written by Matt Miller (“Chuck”), who will also executive produce alongside Dan Lin.

The project hails from Warner Bros. Television, whose in-house partner Warner Bros.Pictures produced the “Lethal Weapon” films.

Way back in 2011, there was talk of Warner Bros and producer Joel Silver moving forward with a remake of "Lethal Weapon," but as a movie, not a TV series. The plan was to essentially relaunch the white/black buddy cop franchise that previously helped make Mel Gibson and Danny Glover household names. A writer was been hired to pen a screenplay for the reboot – Will Beall, a former LA police officer who wrote the 2006 novel "L.A. Rex."

A 5th installment in the franchise had been in the works at Warner Bros for some time before that, with the original starring cast returning, but that went nowhere; Mel Gibson’s then publicity nightmares certainly didn’t help matters. So, the plan with this remake/reboot/relaunch was to start from scratch, and bring in an entirely new cast. 

It was pitched to Warner Bros as “a hard R-rated edgy street cop movie,“ but it never happened. And there’s no guarantee this one will either. A lot still has to happen before it makes its way into Fox’s TV lineup. The network hasn’t been able to score an original scripted drama series hit beyond "Empire." New entries "Minority Report" and "Scream Queens" have been ratings duds, and "Rosewood" is being helped by its lead-in time to "Empire," faring better than the other 2; although it’s too early to tell if it’ll last. And last night’s season 3 premiere of "Sleepy Hollow" drew its worst ratings ever! 

So Fox could use another hit dramatic series!

The TV reboot will reportedly utilize a similar setup as the original film.
